Musical pair release charity song in aid of Afghan Heroes

MUSICIANS from East Grinstead are helping to support brave members of Britain's armed forces.
Anton Lorien and John Simons, who live in Badgers Way, have co-written a song entitled We Are The Brits in support of the charity Afghan Heroes.

Mr Lorien, 26, said: "We really wanted to give something back, and make the soldiers and the whole of the UK proud to be British."
The charity was formed last year by the mothers of soldiers killed in Afghanistan.
They first met when they went to collect their sons' bodies at RAF Lyneham and decided to start the charity.
Mr Lorien said: "The music is there to remind everyone why our armed forces are out there and the fact that they are keeping us safe."
The song took around eight months to create, from the idea to production.
"It was all worth it. It was hard work and certainly a little stressful at times, but it was all for a good cause."
The song's aim is to support and help the servicemen and women on the frontline and the families of the fallen as well as traumatised soldiers returning from service.
Afghan Heroes is the only charity to focus specifically on these things.
Mr Simons, 62, who plays guitar on the track, said: "The song is supposed to be a celebration of the soldiers coming home and the work they are doing out in Afghanistan.
"I really hope people enjoy the single, because the majority of the proceeds from it are going straight to the charity."
Mr Simons added: "We want this song to make people proud they are British."
The song can be downloaded online and is available for anyone who wants to buy it from iTunes.

Linsday Lohan Knife

Opening last night with a gala private launch party, Well Hung at Imitate Modern saw the crème de la crème of London’s high society come over all arty. The new show at the up-market gallery space from leading Hollywood photographer Tyler Shields and London’s Maximilian Wiedemann, explores the psyche of today’s celebrity-heavy pop culture and the manipulation of those in the public eye for monetary gain
Tyler Shields is currently the darling of Hollywood photography and has been cited by the gallery as Lyndsey Lohan’s favourite snapper. His work is a series of Rankin-esque portraits with young LA starlets. Shields rose to notoriety when his blood-bath and porn star pictures of Lohan hit the press at the same time as her well documented court cases earlier in the year. The furore forced the movie star to publicly defend herself, claiming the images as ‘art’ following a deluge of negative press. Shields’ images are portraits that aim to shock; celebrities put themselves firmly on the line in shots that are far away from the squeaky-clean images their management would want to portray. The signature image of the show, ‘Lohan Knife’, shows Lohan wielding a knife in her underwear whilst covered in blood.

Steaks-trolling PETA

The launch on Devonshire Street saw a selection of scantily clad, wig wearing models in their underwear playing with chunks of meat, alluring to Shields’ recent Mischa Barton shots that so enraged PETA supporters. The ladies formed a living installation piece that perfectly complimented Wiedemann’s ‘Closer To God In Heels’, a neon crucifix light box which adorned the adjacent wall.

Naked Hayden Pannetiere

Some of Shields’ subjects portrayed in the show include a naked Hayden Pannetierewith a gun aimed at her mouth and Glee star Heather Morris with a black eye, whist show co-star Diana Agron, blows glitter at the lens with a wig similar to the one worn by the models in the window. The shots just felt like Rankin’s work; simple plain use of celebrity and shock value to make the work feel authentic and artistic.

However, I was taken by ‘Ashley Greene Train Tracks’, which saw Twilight actress Greene in a little black dress with her heels tied to train tracks whilst looking alluringly to the camera.

The image of Mad Men’s Caity Lotz with John Lennon style glasses with peace signs in the star spangled banner colours was a distinct removal from the other subjects on show and played with the young actress’ quirky, off-camera persona.

The crowd that attended the Tyler Shields launch at Imitate Modern made it feel more like a West End club opening than a highbrow art exhibition. It delivered a Jeeves & Hawkes load of Saville Row suits and plastic surgery laden old women, that even the Bride of Wildenstein would have felt at home with. I guess being so close to Harley Street, it was only to be expected.
For all Rankin’s love / hate affair with the arts crowd, Tyler Shields’ work is a combination of pop culture at its portrait-only worst. In days when young British art is at its creative best, the Imitate Modern show in Marylebone showed that high end gallery spaces still favour high value, low quality photography over the new breed of uber-creative young talent that makes Britain Great at art.
The anticipated celebrity guestlist never managed to materialise and the only notable attendees, were Chloe Green and Tamara Ecclestone. Ahead of the highly anticipated Frieze Art Fair, it was a night that unfortunately signalled everything that is wrong with the art world in London.

I often reflect upon the odd things that shape one's life without one really knowing it. My interest in photography was ignited after I saw Michelangelo Antonioni's movie Blow-Up, in which David Hemmings plays Thomas, a successful, yet bored, English fashion photographer. The film has been described as a baffling, beautiful critique of the 'swinging London' of the 1960s. I have held Blow-Up in some affection since that time.

In my teens, my interests were broadly divided into music, photography, reading and film. I read voraciously and carried a camera wherever I went. In those bygone days I walked almost everywhere, often covering seven to ten miles per day. Walking enables you see things others speeding past in their cars do not. I took roll after roll of film, shooting rock bands in London's sweaty clubs, and then I would escape into the forests. I enjoyed myself immensely but had little idea what the future held except that somehow photography and music would, I hoped, become a part of it.

Blow-Up was released during an extraordinary period of cultural change. The music of the mid-1960s was new and exciting. One band, The Soul Agents, became local heroes, especially after introducing a new singer named Rod Stewart. Rod, himself, snuck my cousin and me into gigs in our hometown under the improbable assertion that we were roadies. I was determined to capture this atmosphere on film and reasoned that perhaps the equipment I desired might be more affordable if I worked in a camera shop.

My first job in the photographic world was at Hartle Photographic, a camera shop in Bournemouth. The proprietor was not only knowledgeable of cameras and photography but possessed an old-fashioned psyche that pursued with absolute conviction the concept of pre-Second World War methods of dealing with customers. He worked like a drill sergeant and put his staff through a similar regime, involving us in daily cleaning, dusting and presentation. He also demanded we show customers impeccable manners and unflappable professionalism at all times.

The hardest part of this apprenticeship was the daily quiz. He would walk up unannounced and say something like 'Focal plane shutter – definition?' If you lagged with your answer it was off to the nearest photographic dictionary, and you would go back and forth between study and reciting the answer until you had it right. This went on for nearly a year, and for the rebel in me it was a hard bullet to bite. Then about a year later, something unexpected happened.

I moved to London and went for an interview at a photographic store in W1. I was questioned intensively and my responses were immediate, confident and without hesitation. All my studying of photographic nomenclature and learning how to provide a professional service suddenly clicked. I realised that my much-cursed boss had given me a precious gift. He made me competent in a subject I had little prior knowledge in, and I was prepared to deal with nearly any query. Most importantly, he taught me that a full knowledge of one's trade and complete professionalism are tools that can open doors. The one thing I have noticed over the years is that the most successful shops have training programmes on these key elements as a matter of importance.

For the record my old boss's name was Mr. Hartle. He had a first name but I would never have dreamed of using it, and even today I cannot bring myself to call him by his first name. Somehow it would not be right. It might break just the spell.

Gray Levett is the co-founder of Grays of Westminster the exclusively Nikon dealer, as well as the editor of Nikon Owner magazine. He started his career as a photographer and his work has appeared on album covers, book dust jackets and in magazines all over the world. He has been involved with the Nikon brand since 1971 and is an acknowledged expert on the history of Nikon, having written extensively on the subject. He is a member of the London Press Club, the Explorers Club, the Institute of Directors (IoD), the Nikon Historical Society and the Royal Photographic Society for whom he has lectured.

6. STOP READING THE NEWSPAPERS I kid you not. You'll be surprised how much better you will feel after not reading the newspapers or watching the news for a while (or surfing the internet). With certain noble exceptions such as The Sussex Newspaper, much of the media bombards us morning, noon and night with bad news upon bad news, unsolvable problem upon unsolvable problem, usually dressed up to be as gruesome as possible. It's hardly surprising then that people can get depressed. The media might be doing its bit to bolster pharmaceutical sales but we can just skip it. Try it for a while and see how you feel.

8. DO DIANETICS
This is a personal recommendation, having tried it for myself. If you want to understand your own mind and what makes you and other people tick, if you want to know the source of the neuroses, fears and compulsions that beset us, then get a book on Dianetics and read it. This is the best remedy for depression I personally ever came across but it goes much further than that. It gives the likes of you and me the tools with which to help ourselves and one another. It is well worth giving it a go. Reading a book has no known side effects. This lesson follows on from Noshi-do, Lesson 4(a). This article, is just the thing, I work in a supermarket, and have done for 5 years, The data on physical activity ties in with what I experience, (it was a surprise to find out that several of my collegues were on "happy pills" and looking at them they were all till opperators or on less active post. I have apart from anesthetics, in hospital have not even taken an asprin since 1984. Reading this article I begin to see why

I totally agree and have seen exactly what you are proposing to work every time. In this day and age it is easy to overlook the fact that our bodies might just be undernourished, over-tired or under-exercised for us to feel well. Somehow that immediately gets translated into depression instead. Also putting and keeping our attention on negative happenings instead of creating art, objects, circumstances of value will undoubtedly lead to depression.

And thirdly I have used Dianetics with many, many people over the last 36 years and I have never seen it not bring relief and joy to a person's life. Unraveling an annoyingly unhappy mystery is always such a relief when you finally see the truth of it so you can at last handle it! I am very grateful to have the data to help others by either referring them to it or using it to help others. It's a very good point to make. Thank you for sharing it!

Kizzi Nkwocha is another man who has vowed to give Max Clifford a run for his money. Nkwocha, a former News of the World journalist with 'trademark' bleached-blond hair, runs an agency called 15 Minutes, brokering the confessions of the not-very rich and not-yet famous. His website promises to put you in touch with a 'personal robot representative' with whom you can share details of your 'unique lifestyle' or an 'unusual personal experience you want to relate to the public'. Mostly this means that Nkwocha supplies the daytime talk shows with clients prepared to come clean about their secrets and fears and addictions.
He says he'd like to suggest that he'd got out of tabloid newspapers - out of 'kicking and tricking people' - for altruistic motives, but mostly it was a business decision. He receives, he claims, around 1,000 emails a day, of which 70 per cent are 'probably uninteresting', but around a third of which will give him pause. 'This morning,' he tells me, giggling, he's 'received a note from a woman who believes she has the largest nipples in the world and wants me to set up a competition to prove it.'
When the agency began, it was almost exclusively providing guests for Kilroy and Trisha and Vanessa, and the great thing was, says Nkwocha, that you could tell the same story over and over again through different outlets all over the world. He could flog reformed wife beaters to America and export home-

grown swingers to Germany.
The appetite for such confessions seems to stem directly from the trajectory of such stories as Allwood's. If there is a currency of our times, as she suggests, it is our desire to judge others in public in order to get a sense of how we might judge ourselves in private. Perhaps because our own mores and ethics are so uncertain, because there are few acceptable standards of public behaviour, we like to test our sense of morality against these real-life dramas. That this prurience now comes in the guise of group therapy makes it all the more seductive.
'People talk about a vicarious world where we get our fix of social interaction sort of second-hand, and I think that's true to a certain extent,' says Nkwocha. 'But also we want to know all the secrets of other people's lives, and see how they match up to our own.'
While this may explain the appeal of confessional shows, the desire to appear on them generally seems, at best, an act of desperation or misplaced egotism. 'It's like people have always wanted to walk into a party and be noticed,' says Nkwocha. 'But the difference now is that there are so many outlets for people to do that.'
Are there any stories he will turn down?
'The only thing I turn down is my collar,' he says, smiling. 'No, but they are all my babies, really. And' - without much irony - 'it's not really a product, it's dreams we are selling.'
