Organisers of the annual Heather Angel Wildlife and Natural History Workshop have been forced to cancel the event owing to overrunning 'renovation' work.
Now in its 14th year, the event was due to take place at Saint Hill Manor in West Sussex on 23 July.
Aimed at amateurs and experienced photographers alike it was due to include lectures, plus the chance to handle the latest Nikon camera gear.
A spokesman for the event, which is organised by Nikon dealer Grays of Westminster, told Amateur Photographer that the venue 'isn't going to be ready on time', after scheduled renovation work at Saint Hill Manor overran.
Grays of Westminster co-founder Gray Levett said he has not been able to find a suitable alternative venue, but he hopes to organise a smaller workshop in London later this year for people who had planned to attend.
He said that those who have already paid for tickets will receive a refund.
Saint Hill Manor is an 18th century sandstone building, surrounded by 59 acres of landscape gardens on the outskirts of East Grinstead.
‘Repair works’. Lulz. For an outdoor event?

She will show comparative shots taken with available light and after modifying it to enhance the subject, which will be relevant to the afternoon session. Heather will also show how enhanced depth of field is possible with 3-D macro shots by using focus stacking. Multiple exposure digital images created in-camera are possible to achieve on only some Nikon cameras; however, it is also possible to produce multi-exposure images from any camera by shooting individual shots and combining them using a software program.
Copies of Heather's books will be available this weekend.
11.15 Break for mid-morning refreshment: tea, coffee, mineral water on the Terrace.
11.45 - 12.45 Nikon Total Imaging System - John Clements
Regardless of your choice of Nikon camera, you need to know how to achieve the best from it using Nikon optics, plus Nikon Speedlights and software; so the NTIS will be fully explained. In a live shoot environment, using Speedlight illumination inside, John Clements will demonstrate how to create images to using the Creative Lighting System and in camera options to cover various genres of natural history photography, explaining every step of the way from taking the initial image to the end result. As our example images are shot, they will appear on screen. John will then talk through as he fine-tunes and improves upon them in camera. Each vital camera feature - from focusing and exposure with many other considerations - will be detailed and exact settings explained during the shoot.

Gray Levett is Back From The Front - Amateur Photographer - news
Monday 25th June 2007
Gray Levett
I often reflect upon the odd things that shape one's life without one really knowing it. My interest in photography was ignited after I saw Michelangelo Antonioni's movie Blow-Up, in which David Hemmings plays Thomas, a successful, yet bored, English fashion photographer. The film has been described as a baffling, beautiful critique of the 'swinging London' of the 1960s. I have held Blow-Up in some affection since that time.
In my teens, my interests were broadly divided into music, photography, reading and film. I read voraciously and carried a camera wherever I went. In those bygone days I walked almost everywhere, often covering seven to ten miles per day. Walking enables you see things others speeding past in their cars do not. I took roll after roll of film, shooting rock bands in London's sweaty clubs, and then I would escape into the forests. I enjoyed myself immensely but had little idea what the future held except that somehow photography and music would, I hoped, become a part of it.
Blow-Up was released during an extraordinary period of cultural change. The music of the mid-1960s was new and exciting. One band, The Soul Agents, became local heroes, especially after introducing a new singer named Rod Stewart. Rod, himself, snuck my cousin and me into gigs in our hometown under the improbable assertion that we were roadies. I was determined to capture this atmosphere on film and reasoned that perhaps the equipment I desired might be more affordable if I worked in a camera shop.
My first job in the photographic world was at Hartle Photographic, a camera shop in Bournemouth. The proprietor was not only knowledgeable of cameras and photography but possessed an old-fashioned psyche that pursued with absolute conviction the concept of pre-Second World War methods of dealing with customers. He worked like a drill sergeant and put his staff through a similar regime, involving us in daily cleaning, dusting and presentation. He also demanded we show customers impeccable manners and unflappable professionalism at all times.
The hardest part of this apprenticeship was the daily quiz. He would walk up unannounced and say something like 'Focal plane shutter – definition?' If you lagged with your answer it was off to the nearest photographic dictionary, and you would go back and forth between study and reciting the answer until you had it right. This went on for nearly a year, and for the rebel in me it was a hard bullet to bite. Then about a year later, something unexpected happened.
I moved to London and went for an interview at a photographic store in W1. I was questioned intensively and my responses were immediate, confident and without hesitation. All my studying of photographic nomenclature and learning how to provide a professional service suddenly clicked. I realised that my much-cursed boss had given me a precious gift. He made me competent in a subject I had little prior knowledge in, and I was prepared to deal with nearly any query. Most importantly, he taught me that a full knowledge of one's trade and complete professionalism are tools that can open doors. The one thing I have noticed over the years is that the most successful shops have training programmes on these key elements as a matter of importance.
For the record my old boss's name was Mr. Hartle. He had a first name but I would never have dreamed of using it, and even today I cannot bring myself to call him by his first name. Somehow it would not be right. It might break just the spell.

Hereby I ask Nikon UK Ltd, Kodak US Sponsorships (contact sheet choose OTHER - Corporate information > Sponsorships) and the Nikon Owners Club International (email), if they condone the inhuman treatment of children. And if not whether they plan on any longer supporting the Scientology UK base 'Saint Hill Manor' and its child labor. Gray Levett, co-founder of Grays of Westminster, is a self confessed scientologist and can use that as excuse but I had expected higher standards from Nikon and Kodak.

(...more...)It is worth mentioning that in all my time in UK Sea Org, Gray's was considered a jewel of a PR tool for the cult. Thanks to the aggressive PR methods by Gray Levett and co, big 'photography weekends were often held at Saint Hill, with real celebrity photographers running workshops, these events brought a positive image of the cult to an important PR target group, wealthy Brits with serious connections into politics, finance, arts and education. These were very professionally run and sponsored ostensibly by Gray's and Nikon. I am fairly certain that this stuff continues to this day.
SCIENTOLOGY IDEAL CELEBRITY CENTRES
Today I was asked by the Executive Director of CC London why I had decided to become a Premier Benefactor of the Arts. It is a good question, because for me it was the only thing to do.
I lived and worked in Hollywood for a number of years and Celebrity Centre International was my local organization. My work in Hollywood was always involved in some way with the arts; I moved between the movie world, music, writing and photography. CC looked after me, CC cared about me and CC was always there whenever I needed it. CC was always there as a safe, sane and kind oasis from some of the less attractive denizens of the entertainment world.
When I moved back to London in the mid 1980s, I ran the PR department of an indie record label and managed the careers of some rock and roll musicians. When I heard that a CC London was being started by some pioneering souls, I was both interested and intrigued. Later, when I founded my own photographic company, CC London had become a reality and I started on course there. The space wasn’t very large and there were lots of stairs to negotiate. Then it moved to larger premises, once again with many flights of stairs. More recently it has moved to its temporary home in New Cavendish Street which is all on the ground floor, with no stairs to climb.
During all those years a number of very dedicated souls have been spending hours and hours scouring London looking for that all important building, that place which could house the Ideal Org that LRH, the most abundantly creative genius in the world, so eloquently describes.
“The ideal org is the image one builds toward. It is the product of the causative actions of many. Anything which is short of an ideal org is an outpoint that can be put right. The end product is not just an ideal org but a new civilization already on its way.”
L. RON HUBBARD
Whenever we could, my wife Gillian and I would make a flow to the dream of a CC London Ideal Org and little by little the amounts we invested grew until we arrived at our current ‘Premier Benefactor of the Arts’ status. I use the word invested rather than donated because for me it is without doubt an investment, an investment that offers returns which are not available in any other area of life.
I continue to work with some of the world's greatest photographers, writers, actors and musicians. I consider it a privilege to call Celebrity Centre London my home; it is part of the adventure of my lifetime and there are few better places in the world in which to embark on such an adventure than here, where art and artists are free to inspire the world.
We have located a new building, a perfect building, a building that inspires and breathes life, a building that has been ticking away during many decades waiting patiently for us to arrive and fill it and allow it to be the vessel that will house LRH’s dream. Like nearly all the buildings it has stairs but what stairs! They are stairs that will take you, your friends and loved ones to freedom and create in London the most monumental effects that will be felt all over the world.
Please join us in contributing to securing the Ideal Celebrity Centre London building.
Gray Levett
